Goals focus your thoughts and actions on areas that have precise purpose and meaning. A clear direction can help reduce your stress… Why? Because you not only know exactly where you want to end up, but you are also working towards an achievable goal without wasted or misdirected energy. Goals give you a compass in order to direct your path through a day, week, year and/or your life.
Goals are excellent for people with depression, because without goals we can drift without direction. Goals can vary depending on individual needs and current levels of depression.
Goals can be:
Simple- ex.Daily tasks,Weekly tasks, etc.
Categorized-ex. Short, Medium and Long term goals
The process one uses is not what is important! It is important to have a vision and a plan. For you to achieve goals, you need to know where to go or be. At the same time, you need to know where you are today. Only by knowing these two crucial details are you able to head in the right direction. It is the same as using a map to get somewhere. To get where you want to go, you need to know where you are.
Goal setting can be simple and easy. Remember that just because you set goals for yourself, they are not etched in stone. You can change and modify them at any time. In fact, you will most likely find that modifying them will be necessary as you grow.
I highly recommend that you write your goals down and check them off when completed. There is a sense of accomplishment when doing this! You can see your progress, no matter how simple or complex the goals are.
Something magical happens when we set goals. Goals focus attention towards goal-relevant activities. Once we have the goal set, we will be focusing our time, force, ability and what we want, instead of wondering through life and giving in to depression.
